How do I get a driver's licence?

A New York State driver's permit is a document which allows you to drive an automobile. The privilege comes with a variety of restrictions that drivers must follow in order to remain safe while driving. Before you can get your license, you'll be required to pass a written exam based on the information in the New York Driver's Manual. The DMV examiner will typically ask you questions about road safety and traffic rules. You will also need to pass an eye test. You may have taken this test in high school in which you covered your eyes and read random letters for a few seconds. You must have vision of 20/40 or better, either with or without glasses.

You'll also have to prove your identity and residency. This can be done by bringing a valid document of identification, like an ID card from the military, passport or state ID card. You should also bring documents that prove your current address, like bank statements and pay stubs. You may also need lease agreements.
